Soldiers, Guards & Raids

How Hearth and Hamlet soldiers, guards, raids, combat balance, resource upkeep, defeat, and kingdom defense work in the Demo and official design.

Defense is an economic system

Official descriptions confirm that players recruit soldiers, protect citizens, and defend the kingdom from raids. Security is not separate from city building: military preparation consumes workers and resources that could otherwise accelerate production or construction.

Demo discussions refer to soldiers and resource upkeep, while older developer replies describe raid scaling, resource loss after defeat, and temporary penalties. Demo v1.0.46 then introduced an official combat rebalance. That sequence makes old numerical advice especially risky; enemy counts, costs, and penalties from May may already be obsolete.

Soldiers, guards, and readiness

The full distinction between every military role needs release verification. The useful pre-launch model is:

  • Soldiers or defensive workers require economic support.
  • Guards and defensive systems protect the population and stockpiles.
  • Raids create deadlines that can change the best worker and spending priorities.
  • Losing is a setback rather than proof that the entire save must be abandoned.

Do not wait for an attack to discover that Food, staffing, or a required material is missing. A settlement with rapid construction but no reserve can be economically strong and militarily fragile at the same time.

What to monitor before a raid

Watch the warning information available in the current build, the cost of recruiting or maintaining defenders, Food direction, spare workers, and resources committed to nonessential upgrades. Pause optional expansion when it would prevent a complete defensive step.

The Raids & Defense Guide turns those observations into a preparation checklist. Unit names, final costs, upkeep, raid triggers, enemy values, and defeat outcomes must be read from the version being played rather than from an older Demo screenshot.
